FOOTBALL IN PRAGUE: CLUBS, TICKETS AND HOW TO SEE A MATCH

Want to experience Prague beyond castles, bridges and crowded tourist streets? Going to a football match is a great way to see a more local side of the city.

From the huge rivalry between Sparta and Slavia to an old-school Sunday morning at Viktoria Žižkov, here is how to choose a match, buy official tickets and plan your football day in Prague.

Prague may be famous for its castle, beer and nightlife, but football is also a big part of local life. The city is home to two of the biggest Czech clubs, several smaller historic teams and one of the country’s strongest football rivalries.

You do not have to be a hardcore supporter to enjoy a match. It can simply be a different way to experience Prague, meet local fans and spend an afternoon or evening away from the main tourist sights.

The main question is: which Prague club should you see?

Match dates and kick-off times sometimes change because of television coverage or European competitions. Always check the official club website shortly before making your plans.

SPARTA PRAGUE: TRADITION AND BIG-MATCH ATMOSPHERE

AC Sparta Prague is one of the country’s biggest and most successful football clubs. Its home ground, epet ARENA, is located in Letná, close to the city centre and Letná Park.

A Sparta match is a good choice if you want a large crowd, loud supporters and the feeling of an important sporting event. The atmosphere is strongest during matches against Slavia, Viktoria Plzeň, Baník Ostrava or European opponents.

Tickets for the most popular matches can be difficult to get. Sparta season-ticket holders and club members may receive priority, so do not assume that tickets will remain available until match day.

Home tickets are sold through the official Sparta ticket page. Sparta currently uses digital tickets inside its mobile application, so read the club’s instructions before buying.

If you arrive early, you can walk through Letná Park or have a drink in the beer garden before heading to the stadium. The park also has one of Prague’s classic views across the river and its bridges.

Best for: travellers looking for the biggest and most competitive football experience in Prague.

SLAVIA PRAGUE: CHOREOGRAPHY AND A MODERN STADIUM

SK Slavia Prague is Sparta’s biggest rival. Slavia plays at Fortuna Arena in the Vršovice district, one of the largest and most modern football stadiums in the Czech Republic.

The club’s most passionate supporters stand behind the goal in Tribuna Sever. This section is known for chanting, flags and large choreographies. However, it is an active supporters’ section rather than a sightseeing area. If you want to watch the match comfortably, choose a seat in one of the other stands.

The Prague derby between Slavia and Sparta is one of the biggest sporting events in the country. Tickets are difficult to obtain and the atmosphere around the stadium can be intense. For a first match, a regular league fixture may be easier and more relaxed.

Slavia normally releases tickets once the date and kick-off time have been officially confirmed. According to the club, this often happens around three weeks before the match. Check the official Slavia ticket page and buy through the club’s authorised system.

There are several pubs around the stadium, but they can become very crowded before important games. Arrive early if you want a pre-match beer.

Best for: travellers interested in fan choreography, a modern stadium and one of the strongest supporter scenes in Czech football.

VIKTORIA ŽIŽKOV: OUR LOCAL FOOTBALL TIP

If you prefer smaller clubs and a more local atmosphere, go to FK Viktoria Žižkov, usually called simply Viktorka.

This historic club was founded in 1903 and plays at a traditional stadium on Seifertova Street. The ground is only about a ten-minute walk from Hostel ELF, so this is easily the most convenient football trip for our guests.

Viktorka currently competes in the second-highest Czech football league. Many home matches are played on Sunday mornings, although the exact schedule changes throughout the season. Morning football may sound unusual, but it is part of the experience: local supporters, beer, stadium food and a game before most tourists have finished breakfast.

The stadium is much smaller than those of Sparta and Slavia. You will not get the scale of a huge derby, but you can stand closer to the pitch and experience a relaxed, old-school football atmosphere.

Tickets are available through the official Viktoria Žižkov website. If the match is not sold out, the stadium ticket office normally opens 90 minutes before kick-off.

After the game, you can continue exploring Žižkov, walk up nearby Vítkov Hill or stop for a drink in one of the neighbourhood’s local pubs.

Best for: backpackers looking for an easy, affordable and genuinely local football experience close to the hostel.

BOHEMIANS 1905: OLD-SCHOOL FOOTBALL IN VRŠOVICE

Another club worth knowing is Bohemians 1905, affectionately known as Bohemka.

The team plays at Ďolíček, an old-school stadium surrounded by the streets and houses of Vršovice. The ground is smaller than Sparta’s or Slavia’s stadium, but that is part of its charm. Supporters are close to the pitch and the club has a distinctive identity, green-and-white colours and a kangaroo as its symbol.

Bohemians can be a great choice if you want first-league football without the scale and pressure of Sparta or Slavia. The surrounding Vršovice neighbourhood is also a good place for food or drinks before and after the game.

Best for: travellers who enjoy historic stadiums, local neighbourhoods and clubs with a strong personality.

HOW TO BUY FOOTBALL TICKETS IN PRAGUE

Always start with the official club website. Avoid unofficial resale sites, social-media sellers and people offering tickets outside the stadium. You may pay much more than the original price, and there is no guarantee that the ticket will work.

For big games, buy as soon as general sale begins. This applies especially to:

• Sparta versus Slavia
• European cup matches
• Matches against major Czech rivals
• Important games near the end of the season

For regular matches at Viktoria Žižkov, Bohemians or less popular Sparta and Slavia fixtures, tickets are often easier to find. However, availability always depends on the opponent and the importance of the match.

If online tickets appear to be sold out, check the official website again closer to the game. Occasionally, season-ticket holders return seats or the club releases an additional allocation.

Never buy a ticket for the away section unless you genuinely support the visiting club. It is separated from the home crowd and may have different security arrangements.

PRACTICAL TIPS BEFORE THE MATCH

ARRIVE EARLY

For Sparta and Slavia, arrive around 45–60 minutes before kick-off. You will need time for security checks, finding the correct entrance and locating your seat.

Smaller stadiums are easier to navigate, but arriving early still makes the experience more relaxed.

LEAVE LARGE BAGS AT THE HOSTEL

Stadium rules can be strict. Large backpacks, bottles, alcohol, pyrotechnics and other prohibited objects may not be allowed inside. Requirements differ between stadiums, so check the current visitor regulations.

The easiest option is to leave your backpack safely at Hostel ELF and take only the essentials.

CHOOSE YOUR SECTOR CAREFULLY

The sections behind the goals are usually home to the most active supporters. Expect standing, flags, constant singing and occasionally smoke from pyrotechnics.

That can be an amazing experience if you actively want to join the atmosphere. If you prefer to sit and watch the match, choose a side stand instead.

RESPECT THE CLUB COLOURS

Avoid wearing the colours or shirt of the opposing club in a home section. This is particularly important during the Sparta–Slavia derby and other high-risk matches.

CHECK THE FINAL KICK-OFF TIME

Match dates can move after the original schedule is published. Check the official club website again a few days before the game.

GETTING TO THE STADIUM FROM HOSTEL ELF

VIKTORIA ŽIŽKOV

The easiest option. The stadium is approximately ten minutes away on foot.

SLAVIA PRAGUE

Bus 136 provides a convenient connection from the Žižkov area towards Slavia and the Eden stadium.

SPARTA PRAGUE

The stadium is in Letná and can be reached by public transport through Florenc or the city centre.

BOHEMIANS 1905

Ďolíček is in Vršovice and is accessible by tram or bus.

Prague’s routes occasionally change because of construction and service disruptions. Use the official PID Lítačka application or Google Maps on match day to check the fastest connection.
