ARMY MUSEUM ŽIŽKOV: ONE OF THE BEST FREE MUSEUMS IN PRAGUE
Just a short walk from Hostel ELF, you will find one of the most interesting museums in Prague – the Army Museum Žižkov. After a major reconstruction, the museum reopened in 2022 and quickly became one of the best places in the city for anyone interested in history, military stories, modern exhibitions or simply a good free activity in Prague.
The best part? Entry is free. If you are travelling on a budget, staying in Žižkov and looking for something meaningful to do outside the usual tourist route, the Army Museum is an easy recommendation.

WHERE TO FIND THE ARMY MUSEUM
The Army Museum is located at U Památníku 2, Prague 3 – Žižkov, directly below the National Memorial on Vítkov Hill. From Hostel ELF, you simply walk out through the terrace gate, cross the bike path, pass through the museum’s green entrance gate, and you are right at the main entrance.
You do not need to take the metro, buy a tram ticket or plan a complicated trip across the city. This makes the museum a great option for a relaxed afternoon, a rainy day or a slower morning after a night out in Prague.
The surrounding area is also worth exploring. Vítkov Hill offers some of the best views of Prague, Parukářka Park is nearby, and Žižkov is full of local pubs, cafés and bars.

WHAT YOU CAN SEE INSIDE
The exhibition covers the military history of the Czech lands from the early Middle Ages to modern-day army missions. It is not just a traditional museum with glass cabinets and long texts. The whole building feels modern, visual and well designed.
Inside, you can see historical weapons, uniforms, tanks, armoured vehicles, personal objects, wartime documents and large multimedia installations. The museum also covers major periods such as the First World War, the Second World War, the Czechoslovak legions, the Cold War and modern Czech military history.
Some parts of the exhibition use sound, light and video effects, which makes the visit much more immersive than many classic history museums. Even if you are not a military history expert, the museum is easy to follow and visually impressive.

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT
No matter if you are a backpacker or you are staying at Hostel ELF with a group, the Army Museum is one of the easiest and best-value things to do in the area. It is close, free and big enough to keep you busy for a couple of hours without feeling like you have to spend the whole day there.
It is also a good break from Prague’s busiest tourist spots. Instead of walking through another crowded square, you can explore a modern museum in a quieter part of the city and learn more about Czech history at the same time.
The museum works especially well if you are travelling on a budget. You get a high-quality exhibition for free, and you can combine it with a walk to Vítkov Hill, a stop in Parukářka Park or drinks later in one of Žižkov’s local bars.
Another bonus is the museum café. It has a beautiful terrace with a view over Prague, so it is a great place to sit down after the exhibition. You can get coffee, take a break in the sun and try classic Czech open-faced sandwiches called chlebíčky. The terrace is still a bit of a hidden gem compared with Prague’s more famous viewpoints.

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED
For a quick visit, allow at least 1 hour. If you like history, military technology or detailed exhibitions, you can easily spend 2 to 3 hours inside.
The museum is also a good activity when the weather is bad. Prague is beautiful in the rain, but after a few hours outside, a warm indoor museum with a café can be exactly what you need.

TIP FROM HOSTEL ELF
If you are planning to explore Žižkov, combine the Army Museum with the National Memorial on Vítkov Hill. The two places are very close to each other and give you a great mix of Czech history, architecture and city views.
Afterwards, you can continue to Parukářka Park or stay in Žižkov for food and drinks. This part of Prague is less polished than the Old Town, but that is exactly why many travellers like it – it feels local, relaxed and full of character.
