CHRISTMAS 2025 IN PRAGUE

Prague’s Christmas markets are the beating heart of the festive season. You’ll find steaming cups of svařák (mulled wine), sweet trdelník (chimney cake originally from Hungary) baking over open fires, juicy sausages sizzling on the grill, and the irresistible smell of gingerbread all around. It’s the perfect place to warm up, grab a snack, and soak in the cozy holiday vibe with friends. You can also find beautifully handcrafted Christmas tree decorations, decorated gingerbread, and traditional Czech products such as wooden toys and puppets — perfect souvenirs or small Christmas gifts. The main ones are open daily from November 20th to January 6th, including on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.  From what I can tell, they open around 10:00am and mostly close around 10:00pm. Here are some of the best Christmas markets to explore.

 1. Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) – The biggest and most iconic market in Prague, surrounded by stunning Gothic and Baroque architecture. Don’t miss the giant Christmas tree and the daily carol performances. Open daily From November 29th 2025 to January 6th 2026.

👉 For a fantastic view, climb the Old Town Hall Tower (350 CZK, open 9:00–20:00). If you go within the first hour after opening, you’ll get 50% off the entrance fee!
💡 Traveler tip: Skip the mulled wine stalls in the middle of the square — instead, head around the corner behind the Astronomical Clock to U Prince Restaurant, where the svařák is both cheaper and tastier.

2. Wenceslas Square Christmas Market. Open daily from November 29th 2025 to January 6th 2026. Cool markets packed with festive goods and local treats. Wenceslas Square is a sprawling square where you can enjoy mulled wine and then stroll to buy Christmas gifts. The square is adorned with numerous shopping buildings and offers a majestic view of the statue of St. Wenceslas and the beautifully illuminated museum. Try the Trdelník and explore handmade crafts amid the festive atmosphere."

3. Náměstí Míru & Anděl – These two are among the locals’ absolute favorites. Open daily from November 20th 2025 to December 24th 2026. After work, people come here for a few cups of svařák, so the atmosphere is always lively and cheerful. The Náměstí Míru market, set in front of the neo-Gothic Church of St. Ludmila, is especially picturesque and a great place to buy handmade ornaments or small gifts — things you might not easily find at the more touristy Old Town market. Anděl, surrounded by modern architecture and busy with commuters, also offers a vibrant, local feel.

Hand-blown glass ornaments, traditional Czech ceramics, and beautifully decorated gingerbread — classic treasures you’ll find at Prague’s Christmas markets. These are from Náměstí Míru Christmas market.

4. Jiřího z Poděbrad (Jiřák). Open daily from November 20th 2025 to December 23th 2026.  – Known for its relaxed, community atmosphere and great food stalls — ideal for travelers who enjoy a more local experience. They are also the nearest markets from the hostel ELF. The square is surrounded by cozy wine bars, like Víno Prosím, where you can warm up with an excellent svařák or try Czech, Italian, French, Austrian, or German wines. Perfect for a chill winter evening. From hostel ELF it is only a short walk to get there.

🎁 Bonus Tips – Not Quite Markets, but Worth a Stop!
If you’re walking across Charles Bridge during your winter stroll, don’t miss these two cozy spots we love to visit every year:

  • Bistro Bruncvik, right by the bridge tower, offers great prices and delicious mulled wine — perfect for a quick warm-up.
  • Café Roesel, tucked away in a small passage on Mostecká Street, is easy to miss but totally worth finding. It’s a great stop if you prefer craft beer over wine — they serve excellent Hector beer from a local microbrewery, along with tasty bistro-style food.

Whether you’re sipping hot wine, picking out gifts, or just wandering under the twinkling lights, Prague’s Christmas markets are the kind of experience that stays with you long after the holidays are over. So do not wait and book our next stay at Hostel ELF :).
