PRŮHONICE PARK: AN EASY GREEN ESCAPE FROM PRAGUE

Just outside Prague, Průhonice Park offers a peaceful escape from the busy city centre. With its romantic château, ponds, streams, bridges, botanical collections and long walking trails, it is an ideal half-day trip for travellers who want to see a quieter and greener side of the Czech Republic. Easy to reach from Hostel ELF by public transport, Průhonice is perfect for solo travellers, nature lovers and anyone who needs a break from the crowds. It’s no surprise that Průhonice Park is part of Prague’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A QUIET TRIP BEYOND THE CITY CENTRE

So, you’ve spent a few days in Prague. You’ve squeezed onto Charles Bridge through crowds of tourists, climbed the many stairs up to Prague Castle, and maybe now you’re wondering: “What next?” If you don’t mind venturing a little off the beaten path, there are some beautiful places just outside the city that are easy to reach and well worth the trip.

One of them is Průhonice Park, a peaceful green escape just outside Prague. It is close enough for a relaxed half-day trip, but once you enter the park, the busy city suddenly feels very far away.

WHY VISIT PRŮHONICE PARK

Průhonice Park is one of the most beautiful landscaped parks near Prague. Here you’ll find a romantic château overlooking the water, quiet ponds, small streams, open meadows, forest paths, bridges, botanical gardens and plenty of scenic viewpoints.

The park is known not only for its peaceful atmosphere, but also for its natural and cultural value. Průhonice Park is a Czech National Historic Landmark and is listed as part of Prague’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. It offers around 25 km of walking paths, with marked routes of different lengths leading visitors through some of the most beautiful parts of the grounds.

On my visit, I chose the longest trail. It was very well marked and easy to follow, which I especially appreciated as a solo traveller. Even if you do not want to walk the full route, there are shorter trails and plenty of places where you can simply sit, enjoy the view and slow down for a while.

THE CHÂTEAU AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Once inside, you are greeted by the impressive façade of Průhonice Château. The building has changed many times throughout its history, but its current appearance is largely Neo-Renaissance. The château is richly decorated with sgraffito, cornice work and elaborate metal details, including waterspouts shaped like dragons and serpents.

The château area also includes a café and exhibition spaces. There is a lovely terrace with benches where you can sit and enjoy a calm view over the pond. It is a good place to pause before starting one of the walking routes through the park.

WALKING THROUGH THE PARK

I chose to begin the trail clockwise, passing through the castle gates and down the path towards the water. The first pond you encounter below the château is Podzámecký rybník, home to ducks, fish and aquatic plants.

As you continue your walk, whichever route you choose, you will come across small streams, creeks and several picturesque bridges. The paths lead through a changing landscape of ponds, meadows, forested areas and quiet corners where you can stop and enjoy the surroundings.

The park feels very peaceful and is not overrun with tourists in the way some places in central Prague can be. During the several hours I spent there, I only came across a handful of people. I walked slowly along the path, trying to take in the nature around me, and stopped a few times at the benches placed along the route — to read, write, draw, or simply sit and listen to the birds and the sound of water moving through the park.

BOTANICAL GARDENS, VIEWPOINTS AND HIDDEN CORNERS

In addition to walking trails, benches and picnic areas, there are several other places worth visiting within the park. Průhonice is also home to the Průhonice Botanic Garden, which is run by the Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The park is known for its rich botanical collections, including irises, peonies, daylilies, rhododendrons and many species of trees and shrubs. Depending on the season, different parts of the park come into bloom, so the experience can change a lot throughout the year.

There are also smaller historic buildings and viewpoints throughout the grounds, including cottages and exhibition areas where visitors can learn more about the park’s history, design and cultural significance. The Czech Cottage is particularly charming and has also served as a picturesque backdrop for film productions and fairy-tale settings.

Together, the château, ponds, bridges, botanical collections and quiet walking routes make Průhonice one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Prague.

HOW TO GET THERE FROM HOSTEL ELF

Getting to Průhonice from Hostel ELF is quite easy. From the hostel, you can walk or take public transport to Florenc. From there, take metro line C to Opatov. At Opatov, go up the spiral ramp and catch a bus towards Průhonice. The bus ride is short, and the park is close to the bus stop.

The whole journey usually takes around 30–45 minutes, depending on connections. A 90-minute public transport ticket is a safe choice for this trip, especially if you do not want to worry about changing between metro and bus.

Once you arrive in Průhonice, the entrance to the park is easy to find. Tickets can be bought at the ticket office or from the machines near the entrance.
